"Does anyone know where I could buy a copy of the book Indian Basketry and How to Make Baskets by George Wharton James? The ISBN is 87380-071-0 It was published by The Rio Grande Press, Inc. in 1970. As far as I know this book is out of print. I would be interested in buying it. Please post a reply here if you know of a source for this book. Thanks "

Sometimes finding a basketry related book or other publication can be a very difficult thing to do. Often this type of publication is originally self-published or published by a small press. In many cases the book was published in a small run to begin with and fell out of print rapidly. Trying to find some of these books may end up being an elusive search, but if you are patient and persistent you will probably be successful in the end.

Let me share with you some of my favorite online book search utilities and other strategies for locating that basketry book that you may have thought you would never find.

Other Book Search Strategies

Here are a few other strategies that may work for you as you search for that elusive basketry book or publication.

Post A Message On The BasketMakers Forum.
Other readers of the forum often have a copy of the book you are looking for, or know where to find it. The link I provided is coded to bring you to the forum as a guest. Guests can read all posts and participate in polls. If you would like to post a message of your own, you will need to register as a member of the BasketMakers community. Your email address is needed for registration, but it is not visible to others unless you choose it to be.

Place A Listing In A Basketry Guild Newsletter
Contact your basketry guild or any of the many basketry guilds or organizations around the world to request that an item be added to their newsletter stating your request and listing your contact information.

Post To A Basketry Bulletin Board Or Forum
Post a message to one of the various basketry bulletin boards or forums stating the details of the publication you are looking for. Check back frequently to see if anyone responds if you choose not to leave your email address.

Subscribe To The Various Basketmaking List Serves and Ezines
Post a message to the list serve or contact the editor of basketry ezines stating your request. The additional exposure of your request will increase the likelihood of finding the book you are searching for.

Basketry Periodicals and Craft Magazines Featuring Basketry
Watch the classified ads in basketmaking periodicals and crafts magazines. Consider posting a classified ad yourself or write to the letters to the editor address.

Shop At Your Local Used Bookstore
Search your local phone directory for nearby used bookstores or search this directory of American Booksellers.

Ask Your Local Librarian For An Inter-library Loan
If you just need the book for reference, request a copy through the loan program of your public library.
